Here’s how one leading supermarket, Delhaize ‘Le Lion’ in Belgium has used the WA series to reduce production time by 20%, avoid waste and increase customer appeal.

Improving operator functionality
With Delhaize’s previous wrapping system, assigning the right PLU was difficult with many opportunities for error and considerable operator intervention required.

•The new system has a colour touch screen for quick operator input
•Up to five tray sizes can be programmed against a PLU and, using the CCD camera the appropriate wrapping parameters are configured automatically.
•The operator does not have to orientate packs correctly
•The film stretch is optimised for each pack size, so there are no wrinkles or distorted packs due to overstretching.
•Labels are applied in the same place, every time.

Reducing production time
Delhaize aims to pack all the meat in the morning before the store opens, but because it could take operators up to one minute to change a PLU, they would often struggle to finish by 0900.
•Production time has now been reduced by half an hour each morning, releasing staff for other duties.
•Operators are under less pressure, meaning that packs are wrapped properly and cabinets are filled before customers arrive in the store
•Butchers can spend more time on product presentation to add value

Rewrap option
If packs become damaged in the display cabinet, Delhaize likes to repack the meat to improve customer appeal and avoid product shrinkage.
•The bottom label includes the lot number within the barcode. Once scanned, this enables the full traceability information to be recalled and the sell by date reset, without needing the original batch information.
